Gnarly

Can anyone tell me what kind of tree this is? They were all over the Wharf today and had me absolutely fascinated for some reason.

  1. Thanks Larry! I could not stop staring at them the whole day.

  2. Larry McD says:

Pretty sure they’re young Plane Trees, a variety of Sycamores – they’ve been polled or “pollarded” to make them dense and fairly consistent in their shape in summer. They’re like the national trees of France. Ask your mom what happens when they’re not controlled…. as in the ones in front of our house in Provence. They’re also hugely popular in SF and line the plaza in front of City Hall.
