Day 9: 4 a.m. and hundreds of hot air balloons

I’m currently on a 5,000 mile road trip through 15 states with Cecily. The following is an excerpt from today’s post on our blog,

There’s no way around it: getting up at 4 a.m. is pure evil. It’s almost not even worth going to bed when you’re going to get up that early. Even worse is when you just spent over 12 hours in the car and all you want to do is sleep forever.

But as soon as we saw the first balloon go up at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta this morning, none of that mattered. It was still pitch black outside and the only real light was from the glow of about 10 hot air balloons taking off. An hour later, the sun had risen and about a hundred balloons filled the sky with every shade of color imaginable. Words like stunning, breathtaking and magnificent simply fall short of describing the reality that stretched out before us.
